Gram-negative bacteria producing extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBLs) are rapidly emerging in Dutch hospitals and worldwide. Furthermore, livestock associated MRSA is highly prevalent in pig and veal farmers. Nosocomial infections caused by these bacteria are associated with increased morbidity, mortality and health care costs. ESBLs and LA-MRSA are thought to origin from the agricultural industry, where their occurrence probably results from extensive antibiotic use.

DIAG is rapidly growing both by expanding existing research lines and starting activities in new areas. Therefore we want to expand our team of scientific programmers. Most development is in C++, but we also use scripting (php, python). Web development is becoming more important. We use various quality assurance techniques: svn code repository, bug tracking tools, nightly builds, coverage/unit testing, dashboard, code reviews and work with multiple platforms (Windows, Linux and Mac OS).
