Chitosan polymer, is a modified semi-natural product formed by hydrolysis cq. deacetylation of chitin; chitosan is low-cost and technically interesting polymeric base (i.e. a polyamine) that in water will dissolve and ionize to form polycations; -interesting point in itself, because natural polycations are not very widespread; Chitosan is used as a binder in sand filters, as a flocculant to clarify turbid water, as ingredient in haemostatic bandage to help clog blood and aid wound healing, in dietary pills to bind fat to obtain weight loss (complexation between fatty acids and polybasic chitosan), as a complexing agent for heavy metal ions, as ingredient in medical implants because of its biocompatibel and biodegradable nature, in preservating food longer because of its bacteriostatic and fungustatic nature, etc.
